My program is using APA 7th edition, but I don't know whether to use the student or professional rules. What do I do?

When APA published the 7th edition, they made some rule differentiations for students versus scholarly researchers.

Answer

Unfortunately, this is a question that we cannot answer; the version of 7th edition that you should use is being determined by each department.  You will need to consult with your professor or someone in charge of your degree program.

You will also want to be sure you check your syllabus to see if the professor has asked for you to do something different than the book states; sometimes particular courses will ask you to do something that's a little bit different than the rule book, and in those cases, you will want to follow your professor's instructions specifically for that class.
