What is a call number? How do I use it to find a book?

Answer

  • The call number, located on the spine or on the front of a book, is the “address” of the book on the shelf.
  • The library uses the Dewey Decimal system to organize our books.  The Dewey Decimal call number tells you where a book is located, and it tells you the subject of the book.
  • Library books are placed in call number order on the shelf, starting with 000 and ending with 999.  See the library map link below to help you find the call number section of the book you want.
